Learning about straw bale construction and the revival of the building method in the early 90's, Trey became fascinated with the benefits of straw bale home and more broadly with natural building. When the opportunity presented itself to start a company, Trey looked for a name that would be playful as well as speak to a higher level of quality. Taking some inspiration from the children's fairy tail "The Three Little Pigs" the name Whimpy Wolf Builders was born.
Whimpy Wolf Builders, now in it's 9th year just finished the 6th timber and straw bale home in 2009. We have been evolving the way we design and build our timber and straw homes and have learned loads on each one. Some of the things we've learned along the way is that you really want to think through the transitions. By that I mean everything from the transition from framing to the infilling of the bales, to the transition from one material to the next. We have also learned that the simpler the bale portion of the construction the better, for working with the straw is the worst part of the process of construction. We try to avoid notching, trimming, and/or modifying.
That said, the feeling you get when walking into a straw bale house is like nothing else. The closest thing that comes to mind is the feeling you get in an old world building with its thick walls and romance. The thermal performance cannot be understated as well as the soundness of the straw bale walls.
